Mark 8:34-35
34 And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. 35 "For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will save it."

What a great statement Jesus made. I am thankful that it is by his grace only that this can be done. However it is also what we should strive for, deny ourselves, take up our cross and loose our lives.
I think he is telling us (them) to put aside our will, our desires and seek his will. To not go through life with an I want this attitude, but rather what would God want of me? Etc.
This is impossible to do, except by his grace and strength. It is the same as keeping the law, no one can do it, but we can try to.
